Our History

Nedging Hall is a cherished estate nestled in the heart of the village of Nedging Tye, Suffolk. This historic property has been a silent witness to centuries of change, its story deeply woven into the fabric of the local community. Over the years, it has been home to various prominent families, each leaving their mark on the estate and its surrounding landscape. The hall’s history isn’t just a series of dates and events; it’s a living testament to the lives of those who lived there, shaping Suffolk and its heritage.

Nedging Hall

The estate’s history began with the purchase of Nedging Hall in 1986. Gill and Brian Buckle moved into this stunning house with their children, James and Joanna, transforming it into their primary home. Alongside Nedging Hall was the farm, situated predominantly between Lindsey and Bildeston.

The Lindsey Rose & The Bildeston Crown

After working in London for several years, James decided to return to Suffolk and take over managing the farm.

As the property and farm expanded across the county, James also purchased The Bildeston Crown and The Lindsey Rose. Both properties were in need of refurbishment, so James invested a great deal of time and funds to develop them into the places we know and love over 20 years later.

When the previous tenants of The Lindsey Rose left the establishment in 2016, James’s son Charlie decided to move out of London and take on the tenancy of The Lindsey Rose.

Mauldons & The Brewery Tap

After 3 years of successfully operating The Lindsey Rose, Charlie’s passion for beer led to him finding Suffolk’s oldest brewery, Mauldons, who were looking for a new custodian. And so, in 2019 the family business bought Mauldons Brewery and The Mauldons’ Brewery Tap, both in Sudbury.

Mauldons Company

After Gill Buckle sadly passed in 2020, it was decided that Nedging Hall would be utilised as a holiday let. After work to modernise the living spaces, Nedging Hall took its first booking in May 2021, operated by the same company as the pubs – Mauldons.

When the tenants at The Bildeston Crown made the decision to leave, it was clear The Crown’s ownership would now fall within the Mauldons company. So, in the early part of 2022 the 3 AA rosette pub with rooms came across into the group.

Nedging Hall Estate

After the addition of both The Lindsey Rose and The Bildeston Crown to the Mauldons Company, a decision was made to rename the company to what we recognise it as today; Nedging Hall Estate. Feeling that this name reflected our story much better, as a farming estate with barley grown for brewing beer and produce harvested for the restaurants.

Today we own and operate:

The flagship property of the estate is Nedging Hall. This Estate has been in the family for over 30 years, and currently in the capable hands of eldest grandson, Charlie.

The Hall itself sits in the middle of over 80 acres of parkland within the wider farm area.

The Bildeston Crown, situated in the beautiful Suffolk countryside, is an original timber-framed 15th-century former coaching inn, comprising a public house, restaurant and hotel.

Awarded three AA Rosettes, it’s the jewel in the Nedging Hall Estate crown.

The Lindsey Rose is part of the Nedging Hall Estate and is one of Suffolk’s most charming country pubs.

In the heart of the village of Lindsey, near Hadleigh, The Lindsey Rose is set in the glorious Suffolk countryside.

The Brewery Tap is the home of Mauldons, Suffolk’s oldest Brewery.

The Tap is Sudbury’s original real ale pub, featuring over 200 ales, every year, both locally, nationally and internationally.

The oldest brewery in East Anglia, based in Sudbury, Suffolk. Owning to a rich heritage began in 1795 when Anna Maria Mauldon started brewing beer at the Bull Hotel in Sudbury.
